Suggested Reading List - Unit 1

Writing is the ultimate technology for recording human thoughts and information. The process of reading is immediate communication between you and another human, sometimes someone long past. Most spiritual and religious texts of the world are easily found and researched: the Judeo/Christian Bible, the Koran, the Hindu Vedas, the Buddhist Sutras, the Tao Te Ching, etc. It is impractical and unnecessary to read and study even a portion of each of the world’s religions in an effort to seek spiritual fulfillment. It is equally misguided to cling to a single religious doctrine in an active effort to be ignorant or disdainful of all others. Religious texts give us fascinating insight into the history and cultures of ancient to modern man, and as we read them and seek to understand the wisdom they were intended to impart, we should always remember the cultural filter through which they were produced, which may be different from what we comprehend today.

The following is a list of books, and by no means an extensive one, that we have found to provide the clearest and most direct explanations of the spiritually accessible forces in the universe, and how humans may make use of them in their lives and in their spiritual journeys. The various authors may at times discuss topics which seem unrelated to your circumstances, while at other times they may seem to have their thumb right on the button. It is okay to question and disagree with what you read, but please give each author their day to see the whole perspective. Some discussions may seem excessively spiritual, with little relevance to real life, while others that focus on wealth may seem overly materialistic and opposed to what you had previously thought were supposed to be spiritual values. Spiritual study requires that we give up old attitudes and ways of thinking. These authors share the methods they have used to change their old habits of ineffective thinking to ways of thinking that lead both to skillful living and to various levels of spiritual enlightenment.

There are many other books available with varying degrees of useful information, and there is no intention to limit you, only to direct your study to what we have found to be useful and effective. These books are by no means a comprehensive list, and it is not necessary to read them all. It is certainly not necessary to read them all quickly. They are not all easy to read, and they may take repeated readings to fully absorb the wisdom contained therein. Be patient. Be sincere. Take your time.
